Since Ola fled Eastern Europe with her family, her son has been struggling with (war) trauma. When he ends up in intensive care after an accident and memories of his childhood start to impose themselves more and more on Ola, she also has to face her demons.

FUGUE is about an Eastern European family fleeing war, but although it refers to the war that is taking place right now on the Eastern border of Europe, it is not a 1:1 realistic or historically correct film. Unfortunately, war is a universal theme and we wanted to tell a story about a family impacted by it for almost a decade. Our film could just as well have been set in another Eastern European country. Or in Asia. Or in the Middle East.

A screenplay by Julia van de Graaff directed by Joël Duinkerke.

When Foekje, together with her soon-to-be ex-husband, cunningly tries to convince her mother, an avid doomsday prepper, to give up her house and land, Nel locks the three of them in her survival cellar. Underground, without day or night, Foekje must finally confront her mother about their dark family past.

ONDER WATER (UNDER WATER) is a dark offbeat comedy drama about survival of the fittest, rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and a challenging childhood.

It was nominated in the 1-2 Competition at the Warsaw Film Festival and for Narrative Feature Jury Award at Austin Film Festival (thé screenwriter’s festival in the US) in 2022. In 2023 it was distributed in Dutch Cinemas by Amstelfilm.
